The novel combines elements of autobiography and semi-autobiography or roman á clef, photographic collage and theory. In 10:04, Lerner gets distracted and checks the time on his phone, even when the time is always presented by The Clock. That failure on his part prompts thoughts about other possible time frames, about the alternate realities one might access via art, and he becomes motivated to pursue fictional invention.
